Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and activity level, often impacting academic, occupational, and daily functioning across the lifespan. While it is commonly identified in childhood, ADHD frequently persists into adolescence and adulthood, where it may present in different ways.

Individuals with ADHD may experience symptoms of inattention—such as difficulty sustaining focus, disorganization, forgetfulness, and trouble completing tasks—as well as hyperactivity and impulsivity, which can include restlessness, excessive talking, interrupting others, or acting without considering consequences. These symptoms can interfere with performance at school or work, strain relationships, and make everyday responsibilities more challenging.

ADHD is not a lack of effort or discipline, but rather a condition rooted in differences in brain development and executive functioning. Genetic factors often play a significant role, and symptoms may vary widely from person to person. Some individuals may primarily struggle with attention, while others experience more hyperactive or impulsive behaviors, or a combination of both.

A thorough evaluation is important to ensure an accurate diagnosis and to identify any co-occurring conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or learning differences, which are common in individuals with ADHD. Treatment typically involves a comprehensive, individualized approach that may include behavioral strategies, organizational support, lifestyle modifications, and, when appropriate, medication management.
