ANXIETY DISORDERS

Neuropsychiatric Associates of Austin.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common and distressing mental health conditions, affecting millions of individuals across all ages. While occasional anxiety is a normal response to stress, anxiety disorders involve persistent, excessive worry or fear that is difficult to control and can significantly impact daily life.

Symptoms may include ongoing feelings of nervousness, restlessness, or panic, as well as physical symptoms such as muscle tension, fatigue, nausea, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating, and a rapid or racing heart. For some individuals, anxiety can become overwhelming, interfering with work, school, relationships, and routine activities. In more severe cases, it may limit a person’s ability to leave their home or participate in everyday situations.

Other types of anxiety can include but are not limited to:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Social Anxiety Disorder

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Panic Disorder

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (chronic, excessive worry), panic disorder (recurrent panic attacks), specific phobias (intense fear of particular objects or situations), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Each presents differently but shares a common impact on emotional and physical well-being.

Anxiety disorders frequently occur alongside other conditions such as depression or substance use disorders, which can complicate symptoms and require a more comprehensive treatment approach. With proper evaluation and care, including therapy, lifestyle support, and when appropriate, medication management, individuals can learn effective coping strategies, reduce symptoms, and regain a sense of control and quality of life.
